The Man Behind the Legend
Despite only standing at 5 feet and 2 inches tall, James Stuart, also known as Jimmy Strength, was larger than life. Upon his arrival in Berwick-upon-Tweed (assumed to be in the 1790s) he caused quite a stir with his incredible strength, and soon the Berwick Advertiser was reporting on how he could lift a table with just his teeth and carry two men with just one hand!
To this day, most town residents are familiar with the tale of Jimmy Strength and will proudly tell you about the time he carried his pony across the Old Bridge to avoid the extra half penny toll. In years gone by, there used to be a statue of the man himself located in various places around town however how what remains is stored in the Barracks Museum. The statue isn't on show anymore however if you keep your eyes peeled you may see a few other nods to his likeness around the museum.
